Dry, flaky skin is common. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer daily, preferably one formulated for sensitive skin. Apply it after your Retin-A, allowing it to absorb fully before moisturizing. Consider a richer cream for nighttime use.
Redness and irritation are also frequent. Start with a low concentration of Retin-A and apply it less frequently (e. g., every other night). Gradually increase the frequency as your skin tolerates it. If irritation persists, reduce the frequency or take a break for a few days before resuming.
Managing Sun Sensitivity
Retin-A makes your skin more vulnerable to sun damage. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Dealing with Breakouts
Initially, you may experience a temporary increase in acne breakouts (purging). This is usually short-lived. Continue using Retin-A as directed; the purging should subside within a few weeks. If breakouts are severe or persistent, consult your dermatologist.
