Diverticulitis is an inflammation or infection of small pouches (diverticula) that can develop in your large intestine. These pouches usually form where blood vessels enter the intestinal wall. While many people have diverticula (diverticulosis) without experiencing symptoms, diverticulitis occurs when one or more of these pouches become inflamed or infected.
Symptoms vary, but common signs include:
Abdominal pain | Usually located in the lower left abdomen; can range from mild discomfort to severe cramping. |
Fever | A sign of infection; temperature may be elevated. |
Changes in bowel habits | Constipation or diarrhea, possibly accompanied by blood in the stool. |
Nausea and vomiting | Common occurrences, especially during a flare-up. |
Bloating | A feeling of fullness or pressure in the abdomen. |
Rectal bleeding | While less common, it warrants immediate medical attention. |
If you experience these symptoms, consult a doctor promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications.
