Monitoring the Patient During and After Decadron IV Infusion

Closely observe the patient’s vital signs throughout the infusion, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation. Note any significant changes from baseline values. Report any abnormalities immediately to the physician.

Monitor the infusion site for signs of infiltration or phlebitis. Inspect for redness, swelling, pain, or leakage. If complications arise, stop the infusion and implement appropriate interventions.

Assess the patient for potential adverse effects, including but not limited to: increased blood glucose levels, hyperglycemia, insomnia, mood changes, increased appetite, and fluid retention. Regularly check blood glucose levels as prescribed.

Pay particular attention to patients with a history of diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, or peptic ulcers, as they may be at increased risk for complications. Tailor your monitoring based on the patient’s specific medical history and pre-existing conditions.

Document all observations, interventions, and any reported patient symptoms meticulously in the patient’s medical record. This includes both during and after the infusion, continuing for the duration of the prescribed observation period.

Parameter Frequency of Monitoring Action if Abnormal
Vital Signs Every 15 minutes during infusion, then hourly for at least 4 hours post-infusion Report to physician immediately; adjust treatment as needed.
Blood Glucose Before, during (if prolonged infusion), and after infusion according to physician’s orders Administer insulin or other appropriate treatment if hyperglycemia occurs.
Infusion Site Continuously during infusion, then hourly for the first few hours post-infusion Stop infusion if infiltration or phlebitis suspected; implement appropriate treatment.
Patient Symptoms Continuously throughout the monitoring period Document and report any unusual changes to the physician; adjust treatment as necessary.

After discharge, provide the patient with clear instructions regarding potential side effects and when to seek medical attention. Encourage them to report any concerning symptoms promptly.
